A New Road Opens: The Mae Hong Son Loop Travel Journal

Some roads never entirely disappear from our memory. We find them again in a particular light, in the sound of an engine early in the morning, in the mist resting over the mountains, or in the memory of an encounter that no itinerary could have foreseen.

I have travelled the Mae Hong Son Loop several times, at different moments in my life and with different companions. From Chiang Mai to Pai, the road climbs and winds through the mountains; beyond Pai, the high passes reveal one horizon after another before reaching Pang Mapha. The journey then continues towards Mae Hong Son, before descending to Mae Chaem, climbing once more towards Doi Inthanon, and finally returning to Chiang Mai.

The road may appear unchanged on a map, yet no two journeys are ever the same. The light shifts, the seasons transform the landscape, encounters unsettle our certainties, and some unexpected stops become our most enduring memories.

I am now preparing a travel journal born from these lived experiences. It will bring together personal memories, itineraries, practical advice, photographs, atmospheric illustrations, and musical suggestions chosen to accompany the road and extend the journey beyond it.

This journal is not intended to confine the reader within a rigid schedule. It will offer enough guidance to travel with confidence while preserving what gives the journey its true value: the freedom to take a detour, meet others, change plans, and remain a little longer wherever the heart asks us to stay.

No single destination can sum up the loop on its own. Pai brings its energy and activities; the road towards Pang Mapha opens onto spectacular landscapes; Mae Hong Son offers its temples, lake, market, and the warmth of its people; Mae Chaem invites travellers to encounter local communities, stay in guesthouses, and explore the surrounding mountains; Doi Inthanon raises the journey to the highest summit in Thailand.

Yet the true heart of the journey cannot be found in any one of these places considered separately. It lies in their continuity, in the roads that connect them, in the unexpected stops, the visits, the moments of rest, and the freedom to decide where to linger.

The heart of the journey is the journey as a whole.

The Mae Hong Son Loop Travel Journal is currently in preparation. A dedicated page is now available on my website, where you can discover more about the project and subscribe to receive news of its publication.
